Wyomissing Spanish Club 6/07

The Spanish Club from Wyomissing Area Junior/Senior High in Pennsylvania, USA is planning their trip to Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico in 2007.

The group will consist of around 25 - 30 students and chaperones. They will depart Philadelphia Airport and fly directly to Cancun. The flight is approximately 4 hours in duration.

A sample of their itinerary is as follows:

Day One
Arrive Cancun airport. Everyone will first need to go through Immigrations. They will give everyone forms to fill out on the plane and passports will be stamped. From Immigrations everyone will go to baggage claim and pick up their luggage. Once everyone has their luggage the group will head to customs where each person will push a button to see if they get a red light or a green light. The green light means go. The red light means your luggage will need to be searched.

Once everyone clears customs the group will be met by drivers and vans to take us to Akumal. The drive is about 1 ½ hours away. There are large grocery store, Chedraui, in Playa Del Carmen to stop and stock up on drinks and snacks. This is a good way to save some money. And a fun way to experience a local Mexican Super Mercado. The hotel has small refrigerators and bottled water in each room.

Next stop Hotel Akumal Caribe. Everyone will stay in one of the lovely bungalow rooms, which are small duplexes that are in a garden setting, perfect for groups. Many of the bungalows have small kitchenettes and all have air conditioning, safes and refrigerators. They sleep 1-4 people per room.

Once everyone heads to their rooms and get unpacked, it is off to check out the beach, restaurant, beach snack bar, shops and pool that are all a part of this family owned, quaint resort.

Day Two
After breakfast at Lol Ha The Spanish Club will get to meet their pen pals from the High School across the highway in Akumal Pueblo. Together they will participate in a beach clean up, and walk learning more about the unique terrain that is the Yucatan as well as the Mesoamerican coral reef that stretches along the coast and provides Akumal with it's lovely calm bays.

When the work is done they will enjoy a snorkeling tour of Akumal. Starting at . After this everyone will go by golf cart a mile to Yal Ku lagoon at the end of North Akumal and snorkel in a totally different environment. While heading back the group will stop along the way at Half Moon Bay and do one last snorkeling trip. In addition we will have a beach games of soccer and volley ball and some pool time.

At 9:00 PM the group will walk down the beach to the CEA Center for their Turtle Talk and Turtle Walk. It starts with a short presentation and then the turtle volunteers take everyone out on the beach to look for mothers nesting.

Day Three
People who come to Akumal usually find that they wake up early to the sound of the tropical birds. Most love to watch the sunrise while taking a stroll along Akumal Bay's long white sandy beach.

Then it is off to Xel Ha for the day. This wonderful Eco-Park offers all inclusive meals, snorkeling, use of showers, bathrooms, floats, life jackets, hammocks, river train, and bag to transport your belongings. Use of snorkel equipment is also included along with a free snorkel tube as a gift, towels and a family-sized locker. Meals and beverages in any of our restaurants, tips and taxes are also included. It is extra to snuba, swim with the dophins or do the sea trek. Park closes at 6PM.

After a fun filled day everyone will head to Tulum one of the more famous Mayan Ruins, known for its incredible seaside location. This is the first year that Tulum will have a night admission.

Day Four
Another beautiful day in paradise begins with a water aerobics class in the pool and breakfast at Lol-Ha Restaurant. Then it is off to Sian Ka'an Biosphere and Muyil Ruins. The trip includes: transportation, snack, lunch, guided tour of Muyil Mayan Ruins, Boat ride through the lagoons and canals, a relaxing float down the canal and ends with a visit to a refreshing cenote.

The group will be back at the hotel around 4PM and have some free time to shop, swim in the pool, kayak or snorkel in the bay. Dinner at the Lol Ha. The evening wraps up with some games and possibly a little karaoke under the stars.

Day Five
From 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM it is off to Xcaret. XCARET DAY AND NIGHT ENTRANCE Includes:
Interactive: Coral Reef Aquarium, Butterfly Pavilion, Regional Wildlife Enclosure, Bat Cave, Orchid Greenhouse, Mushroom Farm, Marine Turtles, Jaguar Island, apiary.
Aquatics: Underground River (close at 4:30 p.m), Inlet, Natural Wells, Beach.
Cultural: Xcaret México Espectacular show with dinner, Mayan Village, Archaeological Sites, Mexican Corner.
Services: showers, bathrooms, hammocks, beach chairs, life jackets.

Day Six
Begins with breakfast and then we head to Hidden Worlds to explore the underground rivers, caves and rip line through the jungle.

We come back to Akumal for lunch at Lol-Ha and then off to Selva Maya. The group will take a 3 kilometer bike ride into the jungle on a dirt road to and incredible private cave and cenote.

Day Seven
A day full of environmental education prgrams and projects with Centro Ecologico Akumal. Mixed in with some fun at the beach, games and a chance to say good-bye to new found friends and pen-pals.

Day Eight
Breakfast at Lol-Ha. Last minute snorkel, swimming and shopping. Depart Cancun Airport. Remember there is some great shopping at Cancun's Airport.
